About AtomSite

AtomSite is an open source blog engine based on web standards such as the Atom Publishing Protocol (AtomPub). It has a flexible design that allows entries to be stored in files or databases. The service is compatible with Live Writer.

AtomSite is written in C# 3.5, uses the new ASP.NET MVC framework, and relies heavily on LINQ and other new language features. It is extensible and flexible enough to be used as a CMS. It also uses web standards and has great features built with jQuery.

The main goal of AtomSite is to be a solid website platform (such as WordPress) for .NET and AtomPub users. Since AtomPub was designed to be extensible, AtomSite is flexible enough to be used as both a blog platform and a content management system (CMS).

The service is designed from the ground up to support multiple workspaces (sites) and multple collections (blogs) from a single application instance. AtomSite has a robust role and action matrix for granular control over authorization. Actions can be controlled at three scopes: service, workspace, or collection.

AtomSite is completely modular. Even the core AtomPub functionality is a plugin.

Content

Content is what makes a site great. You can create content for AtomSite with Windows Live Writer. Every unit of content on your site is an AtomEntry. Every AtomEntry has an ID or URI (universal identifier) and various addresses or URLs (web locations). Users can subscribe to updates to your content using an AtomFeed or RSS feed. Your site can have multiple authors or contributors that can create and/or update content depending on the actions their role can perform. You can gather feedback when users comment or annotate your content.

AtomSite Themes

AtomSite has a very flexible theme system. A theme is just a collection of files dropped into the themes folder. You can control which theme is used at either the workspace or collection level. The default theme contains standard content and include areas. You can easily control what is included in these areas. You can create a basic theme that just includes a CSS stylesheet, or you can do advanced modifications to the markup for the master page, individual pages, and even individual controls or widgets.

Through the use of YUI Grids and the widget include system, there is a significant amount of modification possible without having to modify the default markup. AtomSite Plug-ins

AtomSite plugins are the heart and soul of AtomSite. In fact, everything in AtomSite is built as a plugin. This makes it easy to extend and customize. Out-of-the-box, there are many core plugins which provide most of the common functionality a blog or CMS may need.
