Content Management
Content Editing
Kentico CMS provides a powerful content editing interface. It allows users to edit content, preview it before publishing, organize site structure and manage extending modules.
WYSIWYG editor
The built-in WYSIWYG editor is fully integrated into the system. It enables content editors to edit content as if they were using Word. It features:
- Basic or advanced formatting
- Insertion of uploaded images and Flash movies
- Linking to other pages or external files and sites
Content tree and content organization
The content is organized into a tree hierarchy of documents (pages). The hierarchy (content tree) represents the site map and the navigation structure.
Page templates
Page templates created by web designers can be re-used by content editors for several pages with the same layout. Page templates can either contain editable regions where content editors enter the text or they can display structured documents (see Structured Content).
Content Scheduling and Archiving
You can specify when the document should be published and when it expires. A document can be archived so that it's no longer displayed on the web, but it's still stored in the content repository.
File Management
Files in Kentico CMS can be managed as any other document. You can even leverage advanced content management features, such as workflow and versioning or multi-lingual support for files.
Files can be uploaded through web browser or you can use the File Import module for a batch import of a specified directory on the server where the files were copied.
The files are stored in database, on the disk or in both places for better performance.
Built-in Image Editor
The uploaded images can be edited by content authors through the web-based interface. The editor supports basic operations, such as resize, trim, rotate, convert or grayscale.
Built-in image resizing support
Kentico CMS allows you to display images resized to given width, height or maximum side size, without having to use any image editor. The resized image can be stored on the disk so that it needn't be resized again.
Media Libraries, Music and Video
If you need to publish with large files, such as music, video or application installers, you can use Media Libraries that allow you to work with content uploaded to your server disk and publish it on the web site. The Media Gallery also allows you to play video and music on-line. You can extend it with your own viewer controls for custom formats.
Workflow and Versioning
Workflow allows you to manage the process of content creation and modifications. Kentico CMS enables web masters to prepare customizable workflow or approval processes for different document types and site sections.
You can, for example, set up a workflow process requiring that marketing managers approve all news published on the web site.
Workflow notification
Appropriate users are automatically notified by e-mail when a new document is waiting for their approval. The document can be edited, approved or rejected by any user who is authorized for the given workflow step.
Versioning
Kentico CMS optionally stores all previous versions of the document so that the editors can view them and roll back to some previous version.
Content locking
When workflow and versioning is used, you can also turn on content locking. It requires users to check out the document for editing. The checked-out document cannot be edited by other users at the same time which avoids two people working on the same document concurrently. After a user finishes the changes, they check-in the document.
Security
Security is one of the key features of Kentico CMS. Kentico CMS uses its own security system that is based on the standard ASP.NET security features and it also offers an ASP.NET 2.0-compatible membership provider.
Authentication
Kentico CMS supports both Forms and Windows authentication. You can have the system import user accounts from Windows domain or Active Directory automatically. Moreover, you can write your own authentication provider that will import user information from an external database.
Authorization (Permissions)
You can grant users permissions for particular modules and for particular documents or site sections. It means you're not limited to some predefined roles.
Content Personalization
You can also control the access rights of the site visitors. You can create secured site sections that are only accessible by registered members. The members can be displayed with personalized navigation and content based on their permissions, so you can display for example different menu items and content to silver and gold partners in the partners section of your web site.
