Microsoft ASP.NET (1.1, 2.0)

Microsoft ASP.NET is a set of technologies in the Microsoft .NET Framework for building Web applications and XML Web services.

ASP.NET pages execute on the server and generate markup such as HTML, WML, or XML that is sent to a desktop or mobile browser. They use a compiled, event-driven programming model that improves performance and enables the separation of application logic and user interface.

ASP.NET makes building real world Web applications dramatically easier. ASP.NET server controls enable an HTML-like style of declarative programming that lets you build great pages with far less code than with classic ASP. Displaying data, validating user input, and uploading files are all amazingly easy. Best of all, ASP.NET pages work in all browsers -- including Netscape, Opera, AOL, and Internet Explorer.

ASP.NET pages and ASP.NET XML Web Services files contain server-side logic (as opposed to client-side logic) written in Microsoft Visual Basic .NET, Microsoft Visual C# .NET, or any Microsoft .NET Framework-compatible language.

.NET Framework 3.5

The ASP.NET 3.5 framework builds on or adds to the functionality of ASP.NET 2.0. If your site is set to use ASP.NET 2.0 and the 3.5 framework is installed, you should have access to the features within ASP.NET 3.5. If you are a shared hosting customer ASP.NET 3.5 is installed by default. To use the features in ASP.NET 3.5 you will need to use Visual Studio 2008.

New Features in ASP.NET 3.5

  • LINQ and other .NET Framework 3.5 Improvements
Offers a broad integration of Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and data awareness. Write code written in LINQ-enabled languages to filter, calculate, and create projections of several types of SQL data, collections, XML, and DataSets by using the same syntax.
  • ASP.NET AJAX
ASP.NET AJAX lets you create more efficient, more interactive, and highly-personalized Web experiences that work across all the most popular browsers. Starting with the .NET Framework 3.5 release, all of these features are built-in with ASP.NET, which means you no longer have to download and install a separate ASP.NET AJAX setup when building or deploying applications. When you create a new ASP.NET application or web-site in VS 2008 that targets the .NET 3.5 framework, VS will automatically add the appropriate AJAX registrations in your web.config file and the core ASP.NET AJAX server controls will show up in your toolbox.
  • New ListView and DataPager Controls
The new ListView control gives you unprecedented flexibility in how you display your data, by allowing you to have complete control over the HTML markup generated. ListView's template approach to representing data is designed to easily work with CSS styles, which comes in handy with the new Visual Studio 2008 designer view. In addition, you can use the DataPager control to handle all the work of allowing your users to page through large numbers of records.
  • WCF Support for RSS, JSON, POX and Partial Trust
With .NET Framework 3.5, Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) now supports building Web services that can be exposed using any number of the Internet standard protocols, such as SOAP, RSS, JSON, POX and more. Whether you are building an AJAX application that uses JSON, providing syndication of your data via RSS, or building a standard SOAP Web service, WCF makes it easy to create your endpoints, and now, with .NET Framework 3.5, supports building Web services in partial-trust situations like a typical shared-hosting environment.

XML Web Services

XML Web services are small, discrete, building-block applications that connect to each other as well as to other applications through the Internet. They are the fundamental building blocks in the move to distributed computing. Open standards and the focus on communication and collaboration among people and applications have created an environment where XML Web services are becoming the platform for application integration.

XML Web Services let applications share data, and more powerfully, invoke capabilities from other applications without regard to how those applications were built, what operating system or platform they run on, and what devices are used to access them.

XML Web Services are revolutionizing the way applications communicate with each other. With XML Web Services, there are no longer platform or device boundaries to cross.

URL Rewrite 2.0

URL Rewrite 2.0 for IIS 7 is an incremental release that includes all the features from version 1.1, and adds support for .NET extensibility and for outbound response rewriting. More specifically, it can be used to:

  • Implement complex rewrite logic by using rewrite providers written in .NET
  • Replace the URLs generated by a web application in the response HTML with a more user friendly and search engine friendly equivalent.
  • Modify the links in the HTML markup generated by a web application behind a reverse proxy.
  • Fix up the content of any HTTP response by using regular expression pattern matching.
  • Modify HTTP request and response headers and IIS server variables.
