Microsoft IIS is a powerful Web server that provides a highly reliable, manageable, and scalable Web application infrastructure for all versions of Windows Server 2003. IIS helps organizations increase Website and application availability while lowering system administration costs.
Internet Information Services(IIS) 6.0 Web Server is a full-featured Web server that allows organizations to easily deploy Websites. It has been upgraded from Windows Server 2000 and is more secure and reliable. Unlike in Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003 requires administrators to install IIS 6.0 separately. On install it defaults to a more secure "lock-down" mode and can only provide static content. This is one of many default security changes in Windows. Also, all FrontPage, ASP and ASP.Net extensions must be manually enabled.
Other features include its ability to function in a low-privilege user space, denial of anonymous users to write access to web content and its ability to serve up requests only to files with known name extensions. It also allows administrators to discover, recover and prevent Web application failures.
IIS 6.0 allows Dedicated Windows Web Server consolidation, features tools to help you reduce the time it takes to manage your web server infrastructure, prevents domino effect failures throughout infrastructure applications and provides web security by defaulting to lock-down mode upon installation.
One feature that will please administrators is the ability to change Windows Server configuration without having to shut down the server. Administrators can add a new site, create virtual directories, or change the configuration of application pools and worker processes while the server is still running. Administrators also have access to important system management data through its Windows Management Instrumentation support.
Plus, IIS 6.0 features ASP.NET and IIS integration, Microsoft .NET Framework, XML Web Services, the ability to share information across the country and the world, easier server management, server consolidation, faster application development, fault-tolerant process architecture, automatic process recycling, rapid-fail protection, XML-based configuration file, command line and script-based administration, site scalability, new kernel-mode driver, HTTP.sys, web gardens and processor affinity.
