How to encrypt your backup data

This article will show you how to encrypt the data that is backed up with your backup service.

Please note before you begin this process will involve creating a new disk safe.

Creating a new disk safe will start a new seed and may result in two options.

One option is keeping the old disk safe and backup data until there is a new 7 day encrypted backup (this choice will likely cause a backup overage).

The second option is to delete the old disk safe first before creating a new backup (this choice will leave you without backups until the new disk safe is complete).

Log into https://backup.serverintellect.com/

Click "Open".

Click on "Disk Safes".

You may first need to delete the old disk safe if you are going with option 2.

Click on "New Disk safe".

You will receive a warning asking you to confirm

WARNING: Your next backup will take a full seed image of all partitions on this host

Select "Continue".

Here you may select the compression level default is 1 (level 1 will allow a high compression with low disk overhead and low processing power from the server).

Disk defragmentation - this will organize all the free space after a deleted recovery point (recommended is 15%).

Check "use encryption".

Passphrase will be the password you would like to use for the encryption.

Please note this passphrase will be used every time you have to restore data. Any person who will need to restore files will need this passphrase (including us).

If this passphrase is lost the backups are inaccessible (even to us).
