How to enable the Alternate SMTP port in SmarterMail
This article describes the process for enabling an alternate port for SMTP in SmarterMail.
While most Internet Service Providers allow full communication on TCP/IP Port 25, used exclusively for the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service, some block communication on this port as an attempt to combat spam. As a workaround, SmarterMail includes the ability to designate an alternate port to allow for SMTP communication.
Start by logging into SmarterMail as 'admin'.
Once logged in, click the 'Settings' icon at the top of the window.
On the left-hand side of the window, click the option which says 'Domain Defaults'.
Back in the main window, look for the option which says, 'SMTP Port (Alternate)'. Port 587 will already be entered. Place a check-mark next to the option for 'Enabled', and press 'Save' at the top of the window.
Now, we need to propagate the changes to all domains on the server. Underneath the 'Domain Defaults' option on the left, click on the option for 'Domain Propagation'.
Place check marks next to the options which say:
- Alternate SMTP Port Enabled: Yes
- Alternate SMTP Port: 587
Click on the button which says 'Propagate Now' at the top of the window.
You will then receive a message that the changes are being propagated, and should complete shortly.
The Alternate SMTP port for SmarterMail is now enabled.
