How to Create an Exception in Windows Firewall

Some programs and services utilize specific Internet ports to operate properly. With Windows Firewall enabled, an exception will need to be created to allow outside communication to the server on the port in question. Adding an exception to Windows Firewall is a very simple process.

Step 1

First, navigate to ‘Start –> Control Panel –> Windows Firewall‘.

Step 2

Once the Windows Firewall interface is open, click on the ‘Exceptions‘ tab.

Step 3

On the Exceptions tab, click on the ‘Add Port‘ button.

Step 4

Next, enter the name of the application or service which will be utilizing the port, and then the port number beneath it. For this article, let’s add an exception for MySQL, which typically runs on port 3306. The TCP option will be selected by default.

Step 5

At this point, you can click on OK to apply the changes and go back to the Exceptions tab, which will then display the newly created exception. However, you can make the exception even more specific in limiting it to only applying to certain IP addresses. To do this, click on the ‘Change Scope‘ button.

This will give you the option of applying the exception to any computer attempting to access your server, only the network your server resides upon, or a specific IP address.

If you have any questions about adding firewall exceptions to your server, or server security as a whole, please don’t hesitate to contact our Technical Support Department.
