If the web site is displaying the following error it typically means that the site does not have permissions to access the files.
HTTP Error 401.3 – Unauthorized: Access is denied due to an ACL set on the requested resource.
Internet Information Services (IIS)
Follow these steps to correct the NTFS permissions issue.
First you will need to login to the web server where the site is hosted.
Next you will need to open up the IIS Manager.
Expand the tree on the left hand site to list all the web sites on the web server.
Now locate the site on the right hand window and right click on it and select Properties.
Now select the Directory Security tab.
Now click the edit button at the top under Authentication and Access control.
At the top of the box you will see the windows user name the site uses.
Now that we know what user name the site is using we can grant permissions for it.
Access the hard drive on the server and find the web site’s folder.
The folder should be ‘c:\inetpub\wwwroot\domainname’ in most cases. In this case, its ‘c:\inetpub\wwwroot\mysite.net\’.
Once you are in that folder you should see another wwwroot folder, right click on it and select ‘Sharing and Security‘.
Now select the ‘Security‘ tab and click the Add button.
Now click the ‘Advanced’ button and then the ‘Find‘ Now button.
This will display all users on the system, locate the user the site was using in IIS and highlight it and then click Ok.
Once the user is in the dialog box press Ok again.
Now, grant that user Modify permissions by checking the Modify checkbox and then hit Ok.
After all these steps have been completed test the site. It should no longer be displaying the access error.
