How to Backup a MySQL Database

Connect to the server via RDP

Open MySQL Workbench

If there are no existing connection, connect to the server you wish to back up

Click on New Connection

Fill in the requested information

  • Connection name – The name that will be shown in MySQL Workbench (Does not affect connection)
  • Hostname – The IP address or hostname for the server
  • Port – 3306 is standard, modify if the server listens on an alternate port
  • Username – Usually root, but any account with similar privileges will work
  • The rest of the information can stay as is

Hit Test Connection

Insert the password for the account and try to connect

If your connection is successful, hit Ok

Click on Manage Import/ Export

Select the server that contains the database you wish to back up

Hit OK

Insert the password if prompted to do so

At this time a new tab will open for the database administration

Select the database you wish to export in the Select Database Objects to Export

On the Options section select Export to Self-Contained File

Change the file path to the desired location and file name

Check all the boxes so everything will be exported

Click on Start Export

You can now restore this file onto another MySQL server!
