How do I Perform a Telnet?

Telnet is a useful network protocol that for this purpose we’ll be using it to test your ability to connect to a specific service or server and testing if a specific port is open.

For this test we’ll provide instructions on using Telnet with the two most common Operating Systems, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.

Background

There are 3 basic parts of a Telnet command 2 of which can be changed depending on what your testing.

Syntax: telnet [] or telnet [ ]

For example: telnet mail.domain.com 25
This test connecting to a mail server at mail.domain.com and seeing if port 25 is open.

Another example: telnet 127.0.0.1 3389
This test connecting to 127.0.0.1 and seeing if port 3389 is open which would confirm is Remote Desktop is working.

The major advantage of using Telnet like this is to see if you can connect to a service or server and testing if a specific port(usually related to a service) is open and working.

For this reason it is an invaluable diagnostic and troubleshooting tool.

Common Ports to test

21 – FTP
25 – SMTP (outgoing mail)
80 – HTTP (non-secure web traffic)
110 – POP (incoming mail)
143 – IMAP (incoming mail)
443 – HTTPS (secure web traffic)
587 – SMTP (outgoing mail, alternate)
3389 – Remote Desktop
